This study analysed the research domain ‘digital library’ from the perspective of library and information science. The authors searched keywords digital library/digital libraries in database LISA from 1994 to 2008. Fifty-four journals and 120 descriptors were selected and analysed with profiling, parallel nearest neighbour clustering and cluster-based network methods. Phase 1 included fundamental research (with main descriptor electronic media); Phase 2 research was related to user studies; Phase 3 research was related to metadata.
