Abstract
The interrelation of political and educational issues in Italian preschool policy is outlined and the national legislation regulating Italian nursery schools, their programmes, and their guiding principles are compared with the regulations and experiments going on in some nursery schools established by local administrations. In particular, the gestione sociale, i.e. the kind of community participation which has been attempted in the past few years in local nursery schools and creches, is discussed. Some features and problems of the new creches are sketched.
