Conceptual and empirical issues involved in the measurement of intergenerational relations constitute a significant challenge for aging research. This manuscript reviews several of these issues, including: (1) levels of analysis, (2) conceptualization, and (3) empirical assessment of measurement adequacy, with special attention to issues of correlated measurement error. Suggestions for addressing these issues are provided, with illustrations drawn from the Southern California Study of Three Generations.
