Due to an error in the course of production, this special section was published without properly acknowledging the editorial contribution of our two guest editors, Dr Christine Lohmeier and Dr Christian Pentzold. They proposed the original aims and rationale for the special section to the Editorial Board, drafted the call for papers and, working with the issue editors, were closely involved in the selection and editing of submitted articles.
