Genetic techniques, developed and refined over the past few years, have been responsible for the rapid explosion of knowledge about the molecular alterations that contribute to neoplastic transformation. We provide an overview of how these recent developments have and might be applied to the area of cancer prevention and discuss some problems and challenges relevant to their application to clinical practice.
