This article highlights the technological advances that have led to the development of the laptop computer. A chronology of size reduction through four generations of computers is detailed. This chronological history is followed by a discussion of the Dynabook, a speculative computer that served as a conceptual precursor of today's laptop. Finally, the jump from the portable computer to the laptop is discussed.
