Abstract
Vision screening services are provided in almost all school programs for regular students. However, many special education students are unable to benefit from these screening programs do to their inability to perform on the screening tests commonly used. The Parsons Visual Acuity Test (PVAT) described in this article has been developed for use with difficult-to-test individuals who have previously been labeled untestable. Tests of validity produced significant correlations between the PVAT and the Snellen E. During field testing visual acuity threshold measurements were obtained on over 90% of the population who were previously considered untestable. The studies reported support use of the PVAT as an alternative screening procedure for indentifying difficult-to-test persons who are in need of a professional eye examination.
