Abstract
College and universities have traditionally provided the opportunity for bright young people to continue beyond high school and to complete their preparation for adulthood. But since these students and the campuses they attend (especially American ones) are so varied, college means many different things. Some students proceed effectively and fulfill their potential, others falter or drop out. This article explores the academic and non-academic patterns of success and difficulty that the brightest college students display. Just as there is no single “bright college student,” so there is no simple “adjustment to college.”
