The geometric distortion due to the neglect of refraction in existing ultrasound scanners is demonstrated. An iterative technique to correct for refraction errors in B-mode ultrasound, denoted Second Order Refraction Transposition (SORT), is presented. In vitro experiments were performed that confirm the calculated results.
