Abstract
Soltis claims that the members of any profession need a “professional literacy” of concepts and concerns held in common if they are to communicate effectively in debate and cooperative problem-solving. Properly conceived, he argues, social and psychological foundations instruction can provide teachers with a common background of theoretical frameworks, major concepts, alternative models, and historical precedents necessary for shared understanding and communication. Toward this end, Soltis suggests several fundamental educational questions that each prospective teacher should be equipped to reflect upon in informed ways.
