Abstract
This study delves into the burgeoning realm of podcasts as transformative spaces for social justice and new literacies. With the global surge in podcast consumption, their potential to influence social actors and communities is apparent. Focusing on the Growing Democracy Podcast, we employ Critical Discourse Analysis to find how podcasts foster storytelling, truth-telling, and meaning-making, while also reframing history and constructing intersectional solidarity. Drawing from data encompassing 18 hours of podcast episodes, we explore the role of podcasts in shaping new literacies and challenging traditional epistemologies. By highlighting the democratizing nature of podcasting, we illuminate its capacity to amplify marginalized voices and cultivate dialogue across diverse identities. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of how podcasts shape knowledge production and dissemination in the digital age, expanding the discourse on media’s role in social justice and equity.
