Abstract
USING A MODEL BASED ON THE FUNCTIONS OF LANGUAGE, THIS ARTICLE EXPLORES THE MAJOR DIMENSIONS OF THE CONCEPT OF REGION. THE CONCEPT IS SHOWN TO INVOLVE AN ELEMENT OF SOCIAL EVALUATION, OF PRACTICAL SOCIAL ACTION, AND OF VISIONARY REFORM AS WELL AS AN ELEMENT OF SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY. CORRESPONDING TO THESE ELEMENTS FOUR MODES OF REGIONALIZATION AND OF REGIONAL CLASSIFICATION ARE IDENTIFIED. BY NAMING THESE MODES THE VOCABULARY OF REGIONAL STUDIES IS BOTH EXPANDED AND REFINED. EXAMPLES OF THE TYPES OF REGION PRODUCED BY EACH REGIONALIZATION MODE ARE PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED.
