Using the Harris-Benedict equation for basal metabolic rate, nomograms were designed for the purpose of estimating the resting energy expenditure of male and female patients. These nomograms were applied to data from a sample of 63 patients having wide ranges in height, weight, and age. The results matched calculated values (± 5 kcal/day). We recommend the use of these nomograms for easy calculation of resting energy expenditure at the bedside.
