In laboratory groups, leader competence, group member competence, and mode of leader influence were manipulated. Compliance with a keader's task suggestions was a function of the group member's own perceived competence and mode of leader influence. When group members were of moderate competence, leader's ideas to facilitate performance presented in the form of a demand were more successful in gaining compliance than those ideas presented with no direct influence attempt.
