Kruglanski proposed replacing the internal-external partition in attribution theory with a distinction between endogen ous and exogenous attributions (analogous to the distinction between means and ends). His proposal is criticized on the following grounds: (a) the discussion of the traditional internal-external partition misrepresents much of the theory and research concern ing this partition; (b) due to a lack of specific criteria it is sometimes difficult to apply or test the endogenous-exogenous model; (c) the distinction between endogenous and exogenous attri butions is in part a restatement of Jones and Davis' correspondence model; (d) methodological problems undermine his application of the endogenous-exogenous model to studies on intrinsic motiva tion.
