While biblical scholars have experienced considerable difficulty tracing any consecutive argument throughout the First Epistle of John, they have noted its extensive use of dualistic and antithetical language. This study combines the insights from three paradigms to suggest a more coherent understanding of the structure of 1 John as dialectical discourse.
