It is well known in gospel studies that the Gospel of Matthew goes well beyond the Gospel of Mark in stressing Jesus as the "Son of David" (Fuller; Lövestam; Gibbs; Fitzmyer; Suhl; L. Fisher; Berger; Burger; Kingsbury; Duling 1978; Chilton). This study seeks to advance beyond such redaction critical studies by interpreting this theme with insights derived from the social sciences. Several models are used to lend perspective to the context of both the author and his story. Using the models as heuristic devices, or lenses to obtain a sharper focus, the object is to develop more socio-critically informed interpretations of Matthew's Son of David text segments.
