Abstract
Proper and respectful use of the Judaeo-Christian scriptures in any cultural context other than the Mediterranean culture in which these scriptures originated is a cross-cultural enterprise requiring proper cross-cultural translations and adaptations. Those who propose Mary the Mediterranean maiden, mother of Jesus, as a model for imitation thereby also enjoin imitators to engage in such a cross-cultural challenge. The social sciences, notably cultural and Mediterranean anthropology, contribute useful methods and invaluable insights to meet this challenge. Wellness spirituality is a creatively original translation and adaptation of the Mediterranean values peculiar to the Judaeo-Christian scriptures into a distinctively American life-style.
