Abstract
This paper explains the physi ology of pregnancy and interre lates this information with the effects of pregnancy on the woman with pregestational diabetes mellitus. A review of the effects of diabetes on the fetus is presented, with information provided on the major complications that can negatively affect the fetus. The positive influence of intensive therapy on maternal and fetal outcome is stressed. The essential components of this therapy, along with possible variations in insulin treatment, are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the need for involving many disciplines in establishing this treatment.
