Abstract
Hand-held computer-assisted insulin delivery was studied in patients with Type I diabetes mellitus. Initially studies were undertaken with continuous subcutaneous insulin (CSII) delivery systems. A second computer program was then developed that utilized inter mediate (NPH) and short-acting (Regular) insulins. Computer usage was found to be accep table to patients and safe in comparison with intensive insulin delivery methods. During periods of computer use, patients were found to perform more blood glucose determinations and achieve lower mean blood glucose values as evidenced by home monitored blood glucose values as well as hemoglobin AIc values. Computer-assisted insulin delivery may be a useful adjunct to diabetes education in the near future.
