Abstract
A survey of 44 residential schools for the visually impaired indicated that the most widely used approach for teaching reading is the basal reader approach, the most prevalent standardized achievement test is the Stanford Achievement Test, and the formal procedure used most frequently to determine the grade level of printed materials is the Fry formula. On the whole, teachers seem to choose reading materials for their students on the basis of subjective judgment.
