Abstract
Although no discipline has yet addressed itself to the task of creating effective procedures for teaching blind people nonverbal skills, the scant data available recommend exploration of this neglected area. Research from related disciplines shines a faint light on the origins of our silent language. The few teaching strategies attempted thus far have had encouraging results, but more extensive research must be done to develop reasonable objectives, effective teaching methods, and a valid assessment instrument for evaluating nonverbal skills.
