Abstract
Reports two attempted improvements over existing techniques for effecting the recognition of spatial patterns imparted by means of vibrating points to the skin of blind persons. The limitations of abdomen and fingertips as stimulation sites are discussed, and experimental evidence of the effectiveness of the forehead, which does not share these limitations, is reported. In addition, a novel electronic scan system is reported which effected pattern recognition as well as, or better than, existing systems, and which promises certain advantages over them.
