Abstract

Wójcik, M., Eikeseth, S., Eikeseth, F. F., Budzinska, E., & Budzinska, A. (2023). A Comparison Controlled Study Examining Outcome for Children with Autism Receiving Intensive Behavioral Intervention (IBI). Behavior Modification, 47(5). https://doi.org/10.1177/01454455231165934
The study received Research Ethics Approval from the University of Gdansk, Poland. Participation in the study was voluntary for all participants in both groups. Parents had the option to withdraw their participation at any time without facing any consequences.
The Intensive Behavioral Intervention (IBI) was pioneered by Drs. Krantz and McClannahan at the Princeton Child Development Institute during the 1970s and 80s. This extensively researched treatment model is offered by numerous treatment centers across the US and several sites in Europe, including the IWRD center in Gdansk, the location of this study. The first author informed parents attending the IWRD center about the study. Children were included in the study if their parents consented and signed the informed consent form.
The Eclectic Autism Specific Intervention provided to participants in the comparison group represented the “treatment as usual” for preschool-aged children with autism in Gdansk, Poland. To recruit participants for this group, the first author established contact with autism centers in Gdansk and its environs. Parents interested in study participation met with the first author. Children were enrolled in the study upon parental agreement and completion of the informed consent process.
This study is the first study comparing the Intensive Behavioral Intervention model to another routine model.
None of the authors were part of the participants’ treatment team at the time of the study.
