Four of the large oil companies – Amoco, BP, Chevron and Shell provide details of their drilling activities on a similar basis.

The drilling records for all four companies show improvements over the last two decades. In 1980 for every four exploration wells drilled by Shell, three were dry. The 1997 records are;
