Abstract
This paper considers the development of exploration activity for oil and gas in the U.S.S.R. Several stages are distinguished, reflecting the principal changes in directions of exploration which have ensured the increase of efficiency in building up oil and gas reserves. Some regularities in the distribution of oil and gas fields in stratigraphic succession and at different depths are outlined. It is shown that the efficient development of geological exploration has resulted in a rapid rise of oil and gas output and led to changes in the structure of the fuel-energy balance by replacing coal and wood for oil and gas.
