Abstract
Oil shale, under one name or another, is found all over the world, and new deposits are reported frequently.
Total worldwide resources in place probably contain of the order of 1014 barrels of oil if all grades are considered, but only rough estimates of reserves are available since exploration and definitive resource evaluation have, for the most part, been extremely limited.
Oil shale industries have operated in at least 14 countries. Most of the operations were quite small by today's standards, and only a very few survived for any length of time. Abundant, inexpensive crude petroleum caused most oil shale operations to be uneconomical.
