Abstract
This paper describes a current technique (ISL) in uranium mining, i.e. by solution or ‘leaching’. Although it is not yet widespread, it promises a relatively cheap and efficent means of extracting uranium from orebodies in sandstone deposits, such as those of the USA, Australia and Japan. The paper reviews the method and its constraints, project evaluation (largely based on US experience) and wellfield design, environmental aspects, licensing and costs. In addition a guide to current ISL activities is given in the Appendix.
