Trade unions support democracy, don't they? A final answer to that question can only be made when union action is related to actual regime changes. The present article discusses mining unionism in Bolivia, Chile and Peru and its apparent preferences in relation to registered regime shifts. The outcome of the analysis seems to indicate that in a context of political exchange the unions in question are more concerned about organizational survival than ideological commitments.
