Abstract
The paper presents models for optimal design and optimal scheduling of a HVAC system with thermal energy storage (TES). The objective function for the optimal design accounts also for optimal operation of the system. The optimal-scheduling model refers to a full charge-discharge cycle of the storage. Both models involve a detailed description for operation of the HVAC main components: the chiller and the storage tank, based on actual information provided by manufacturers. The computer algorithms based on the developed models were adopted in this study for ice storage, applying technologies of ice-on-coils (external), but it can easily be adjusted for other types of TES systems.
