Abstract
Energy storage not only plays an important role in conserving energy but also improves the performance and reliability of a wide range of energy systems. It can be expected to continue as a cost-saving technology as utility companies struggle to meet consumer energy needs without constructing new power plants. An up-to-date comprehensive overview of the role of thermal energy storage is presented in the context of achieving a more rational use of energy and in particular its contribution towards satisfying the future requirement. A summary of thermal energy storage theory is given and its concepts are discussed. The energy density and the economic viability for several storage media are also presented.
