Abstract
A study of hot water service requirements for a modern hospital ward unit has attempted to quantify the excess provided by existing guidelines and to explain how this situation has evolved. The current guidelines are based on a statistical study carried out over twenty five years ago. This time scale, together with the present adoption by the National Health Service of a standard hospital design layout, and also changes in nursing and management practices, suggest that a review of this study is long overdue. The fieldwork was carried out at the Countess of Chester 'Nucleus' General Hospital.
