Abstract
Expert systems are defined and explained, the way in which they differ from conventional software is highlighted and the areas in which they are being currently exploited are indicated. Many areas of application within the building services industry are suggested and the potential problems and dangers are discussed. The experience of building an expert system to assist in the selection of air conditioning systems for buildings is described, explaining the various stages through which the project passed from inception to final implementation. The paper concludes that expert systems represent a valuable cost-effective tool that can and should be used to increase the efficiency of a wide range of activities within the building services industry.
