Abstract
Current trends in domestic heating practice are reviewed and the effects of higher standards of building insulation on heating system selection and performance are considered. Characteristics of the basic types of heating system are examined in the light of increased energy consciousness. Alternative design philosophies are identified and the practical implications of low energy buildings in the selection and design of heating systems are discussed. The arguments are illustrated by reference to experimental low energy houses constructed in Salford and the results of investigative experiments on the houses are considered from a practical viewpoint.
