Abstract
This brief study examined the idea that the misunderstanding of thermostats is related to prior experience of direct heating systems. We therefore tested young persons from a well-to-do area who had been brought up with central heating. A substantial proportion of them failed to understand either (1) how secondary inputs would affect the system, or (2) that the thermostat did not control power. Curiously, those with operating experience showed less understanding than those without.
