Abstract
Energy economy was one of the design objectives for this recently completed office building at the Building Research Establishment, Garston, Watford. The Project Team, guided by BRE researchers, have designed a building that exploits ambient energy to the full. Analysis of office energy requirements resulted in a relatively large area of fenestration on the southern facade. This arrangement required external sun blinds to provide shading in the summer. The heating, ventilation and lighting systems include a number of novel features which directly affect fuel consumption. The performance of each will be closely monitored together with the overall thermal performance of the building.
