Abstract
U-value meters estimate the conductance of a wall in situ from simultaneous measurements of heat flux and temperature difference. The difficulty in achieving steady state conditions can give rise to considerable errors; the effects of inside and outside temperature variations, and of sunshine on the outer surface are analysed mathematically. The performance of U-value meters in practice is described, and the paper gives detailed recommendations for successful use.
