Abstract
Is integration better than segregation? Do special schools segregate children? With these simple questions we begin an article about what we think has been and is being done in Portugal and what we think would be better for us. We also make a financial comparison between integration and separate special education but there are many difficulties in collecting appropriate data. In other aspects of the education of handicapped children, we are almost sure that the sooner inte gration takes place, the better. Ideally handicapped children should never be sep arated from their natural environment which should be carefully prepared to help adequately and to accept all people, each one with his or her difficulty.
