Our aim was to teach word decoding skills to mildly mentally and physically handicapped children, using a computer-based approach. In contrast to earlier work carried out at Stanford University by Atkinson (Atkinson, 1974), which was based on a behaviourist model of the acquisition of reading skill, the method which we devised is based on a cognitive model of the processes underlying reading.
