Sudan lies between 4 and 22 degrees latitude North and 22 and 34 degrees longitude East. It has an area of 2.5 million square kilometres, and the estimated population, in 1980, was 20 million with an annual growth rate of 2.5 per cent. The climate varies between the dry, hot, desert climate in the north and the continuously rainy, very hot equatorial climate in the south.
