Abstract
This project was planned to inquire into some aspects of the child's concept of the speech act. Eighty elementary school children, with ages from 5 to 14 years, were interviewed to determine their views on such matters as how people talk, why babies can't talk, etc. The children's responses were categorized and are discussed as they changed across age levels.
