Abstract
In this contribution, a multi-level concept of organisational fitness is expounded and synthesised with the framework of the VSM, Stafford Beer's Viable System Model. The concept presented is based on recent progress made in the field of planning theory. The main proposition is that organisations must steer themselves on the grounds of orientators which pertain to different logical levels. These must be 'under control' simultaneously, despite contradictions between them. A set of orientators for an organisation to be viable is outlined. In this framework, the notion of 'viability beyond survival' is developed. The ideas expounded are illustrated by means of a real-life case.
