Abstract
The problems associated with step motor driven multi-axis numerical control machinery are examined. Commensurate positioning on two axes is discussed in detail and the results are extended to the control of step motors on six or more axes. A controller design based on a microcomputer and a single VLSI peripheral circuit for each pair of controlled axes is presented. This results in a considerable hardware saving as well as reducing the computational requirements for the numerical control machinery.
