The earliest attempts at mathematically modelling the behaviour of sampled-data control systems appear to have taken place in the first decade of this century in the context of steam engine governing. This early work is reviewed, and the appearance, immediately after the 1939-45 War, of a mature theory of sampled-data signals and systems is discussed.
