Abstract
This paper reviews the methods of gas-flow analysis and defines the optimisation problems in the gas engineering field. The formulations involving the two principal solution methods to the optimisation problems are given. These are the linear programming approach and the non-linear programming approach. The choice of solution methods and their relative advantages are discussed The final section of the paper deals with a possible future area of research with regard to hierarchical control in the gas engineering field. The discussion concentrates on methods of decomposition and possible computer configurations.
