Abstract
The paper describes the development of an on-line instrumentation system to monitor the moment of inertia of a solids-liquid separation centrifuge operating in a highly radioactive environment in a fast-reactor fuel- reprocessing plant. The principal interest of the paper lies in the close interweaving of measurement and control, both theory and experiment that was needed before an engineered solution to the measurement problem was possible.
