The design of an automated system for assessing surface texture is described. In this, a parallel profile tracing technique has been developed which can provide detailed analyses of surfaces of up to 2500 mm 2 in area. Microprocessor controlled data handling, with a storage capability of 5 x 105 height readings and ensemble averaging of up to 100 successive retraces, is employed. Typical statistically computed outputs, together with surface isometric and contour plots, are presented for surfaces with different machine finishes.
