This article argues that the description of Noah as the eighth proclaimer of righteousness can be understood as an explicit reference to the number of generations from Enosh, which is the time when men first began to proclaim the Lord’s name (Gen. 4.26). After critically reviewing three interpretations of ‘eighth’ (ὄγδοος) in 2 Pet. 2.5, and the suggested justifications for the description of Noah as a proclaimer of righteousness, the article examines Gen. 4.26 and the description of people proclaiming the Lord’s name for the first time. It suggests that Noah is the eighth generation from Enosh to proclaim the Lord’s name.
