Abstract
Philo of Alexandria spoke frequently about issues of wealth and poverty, but his remarks contain enough ambiguity that his precise views regarding these issues have been hotly debated. Recently, David Mealand and Thomas Schmidt have debated whether or not Philo’s writings even contain a single coherent view. This paper argues that Philo’s writings do contain a coherent view of issues of wealth and poverty, a view that focuses upon a person’s control over the forces of desire.
