Abstract

The Conservative Party proudly state that they are reducing the number of NHS administrators. By this statement, the lay public might assume that the number of highly paid managers is being reduced. But no: the lowest paid members have been targeted: secretaries, ward clerks, health records clerks and receptionists. These staff are vital for effective care; cutting their numbers is destroying the NHS.
Highly paid ‘managers’ have always disliked being called ‘administrators’, but what are the differences? Managers are the ones entrusted to make decisions.
Turkeys do not vote for Christmas, and managers reduce administrator numbers by getting rid of so many lowly-paid essential staff rather than pointing out that these handsomely-paid managers themselves are the correct target for cuts.
